Some product, though not all, which combines these ingredients are actually effective but no studies could show why that happens. The best thing to do is to find a supplement with a full dose of glucosamine and closer dosage to the correct chondroitin one. Other ingredients are there for these supplements though these two are their major ones unless a new discovery can replace them.
